I'm getting my first car soon and I found a yellow Volkswagen beetle in really nice condition for a good price but my dad thinks its a bad idea because I would have to take care of the top from this crazy bipolar Memphis weather, is there a lot of work to take care of it or what?is this even a good idea?

I had a bmw m3 top and it leaked water. The easy solution even if it leaks water is to cover the entire car with weather proof cover. It may seem steep to pay 150-300 for a particular cover. I believe you would spend 175 for a great cover but it cheaper than spending water dripping into your car for numerous hours. As long as the engine runs strong and everything seems fine mechanically, i say gor for it. Do you know the exact model and mileage, any pics, just curious. gd luck
vw new beetle is the worst car to have,,,,,,see all the complaints, from engine motor mounts, trasmisions,,,,,,,better get another car,,,if you can find the classic old beetle thats anothe deal,,,the air cooled vw is the most dependable car in the world, the problem with modern vw,,you nead to put only vw trasmision oil, because it has a automatic doble clutch trasmision, this oil is expensieve and only the delership sells it,,,,watch,,,out,,you like the car,the give you warrenty,go for it,,remember trasmision service at the dealer only,,,,if its manual trasmisionn dont worry
I have a 12 year old convertible. I bought it used and it for over a year now. It has the original top.
I do not "take care" of the top. There is nothing you have to do. And I have had lots of snow and ice on it.
After 15+ years, the convertible top water proof-ness "might" wear out. For that, you just buy a $6 spray can of a water proof chemical for convertible tops. You just spray it. That easy.
There are pros and cons.
I think they look nicer, can be fun when down, and have a higher resale value because they are more rare.
But it is harder to seal out window noise, expensive to replace, they will wear out faster in hot weather, and the more you put them up and down, the faster they wear out.
But if you have a garage or a good cover for it, then you would not have to put it up every night, and then it might not be too much of a problem.
A convertible is going to be collectible some day.
If you don't take good care of the convertible top, they can dry rot and tear very easily.
If you have anything inside your car that a burglar wants, it is very easy to just cut a large hole in the top and reach in to steal whatever they want.
Sometimes a convertible top will not want to work and is very hard to put down or put back up. Too many parts that might fail at the worse time.
I owned a 1969 vw bug and it was alot of maintenance your always going to be fixing or tuning something.but parts a cheap and its really easy to work on if you want to learn about cars the only problem now auto stores don't stock parts you will be ordering online or going to junk yards
