Is a toyota camry a good first car?

Jan 24, 2012 Author admin
I'm 16, and i have my license and i have 5,000$ as my budget for my first car :) I was using my families 2004 chevy cavalier to practice in and i got my license driving it but i need something a little bit more bigger. I found a 1999 toyota camry LE on craigslist for 4600$ it only has 119,000 miles! which is good right?

What is the estimated MPG for a 1999 camry? Is there another car that would be better? Any suggestions? :) Is a honda accord (1999-2002) a similar car to the camry?

Thanks if you can help!

It is a very good car. The four cylinder gets you about 30 hwy/22 city. the V6 gets about 25hwy/17city.

Edit: I prefer the Honda accord. mileage is about the same. The Camry is still good though.

Toyotas last a long time, if it's in great condition the price is right http://www.kbb.com/toyota/camry/1999-toyota-camry/le-sedan-4d/?vehicleid=6052&intent=trade-in-sell&mileage=119000&category=sedan&pricetype=private-party&isnotabs=true&creativeid=443 .

No it's not a good first time car……. It's a great first car. Roomy, safe, economical and very reliable. Expect on average, 28-29 mpg in mixed driving with the 4 cylinder model. Make sure you're looking at the 4 cylinder and not the V6 as servicing and repairs will be higher on the V6. V6 models are the ones commonly known to have the oil sludge issue,

The 4 cylinder engine in that vintage Camry is the 2.2 liter, 135 horsepower, 5S-FE engine. That engine is used in the 1990-1999 Celica GTs and the non turbo 1991-1996 MR2s, and is easily one of the most reliable engines on the planet. 119,000 miles is good. Just make sure that the timing belt service has been done. If it hasn't, you'll be spending around $500-600 to have a service done. I would deduct that from the cost of the car. If the seller tells you otherwise about what it will cost, just make sure that they have all the belts, the waterpump and the crank/ cam seals replaced. That's part of the timing belt service.

Accords are comparable to the Camry but 1999-2002 Accords have had known transmission issues too. Most of the attention was focused on a design flaw in the V6 Accords transmission which caused a lot of failures, but there was a service bulletin on the 4 cylinder Accords as well. Also, due to their engine designs, The Accord can have serious results if the timing belt ever breaks whereas the Camry won't.
